Just a small thought:

Do you think Lekgolo, the worms that make up Hunters, were genetically engineered by the Forerunners, similar to the Huragoks?

Think about it, they are one of the few species in the universe resistant to the Flood, they can breed pretty fast and make a formidable fighting force, even when they don't have any weapons. They even have a similar hive mind mentality (when combined) to the Flood, perhaps in mirror of the Flood.

Combine that with the fact the planet they were discovered on had lots of former Forerunner facilities on it and I think the chances are pretty high that they were actually one of the plans being developed to combat the Flood.

But don't they eat and devour forerunner stuff and relics?

Perhaps they've always existed since the time of the Precursors but have stayed in their worm-like form because thats what suits their habitat. Or maybe the Precursors used the Lekgolo as experiments to test the Gravemind phenomenon. There's alot that could be thought of

I think its plausible that the Lekgolo actually rolled around post firing, not by reseeding, but evolution. I haven't seen any references to it being reseeded post firing, (feel free to correct me if i'm wrong here) and it would make sense that way. Reason being, we have seen how... "ignorant" some forerunners have been when looking upon other species, if using that logic, why would they want to save a bunch of useless worms?

And technically, they are only immune to the flood at face value. Their biomass could still be used for flood pure forms or just straight calcium for biomass.

The fact is that they (both Bungie and 343i) can't decide if they're extremely intelligent - as it was said they've been put in almost every machine and ship the Covenant had to make them work (even the Dreadnought) - or extremely dumb, used en masse and sacrificed as grunts.

There are, however, other sub species that eat everything but Forerunner relics. Perhaps something got mixed up and instead of 'Not' eating Forerunner stuff they evolved 'to only' eat Forerunner stuff.

The original, non forerunner eating, Lekgolo could also be another point for them being engineered. It increases their survivability hugely when they can eat pretty much any metal.

The fact is that they (both Bungie and 343i) can't decide if they're extremely intelligent - as it was said they've been put in almost every machine and ship the Covenant had to make them work (even the Dreadnought) - or extremely dumb, used en masse and sacrificed as grunts.

Lekgolo are relatively unintelligent at the most basic level, but can form complex thoughts and emerge as a conscious individual when they combine into larger masses that communicate through chemical and electrical means. A colony's level of intelligence is generally dependent on the amount of neural mass present, and can be scaled upward to a certain extent for increased intelligence

I think they are kinda like Geth from Mass Effect. The more that join together, the smarter they all become on as a whole. A single worm isn't intelligent at all, but when they combine they link neural networks and brain function.

Maybe...
Maybe they only make up joints rather than the entire mass, so there isn't as many Lekgolo as you think.

Alternatively, they actually might be as smart as you think, having to control the Scarab, taking in data from sensors the Scarab probably has, sending and receiving/interpreting communications to/from command, firing both the main cannon and the AA cannon, probably communicating with the Scarabs crew or maintaining crew areas (maybe), but they are restricted to the bulk and speed of the Scarab and so can't pull of crazy tactical maneuvers.

One more theory is because of the size and weight of the Scarab the Lekgolo have to dedicate everything to strength and some intelligence is lost because of it. Hey, they're aliens, its possible.

The Lekgolo weren't a forerunner creation as it was stated (Contact Harvest I believe) that they existed during the Forerunners time but were ignored due to being regular worms.

Now, Nightfall clearly contridicts this so bear with the retcon.

I'm pretty sure they mentioned in nightfall that those were NOT by any means normal Lekgolo (could be wrong i only watched it once), that being said, the Lekgolo have been fighting as Covenant strongmen and vehicles for several centuries, that may have very well had a significant effect on their behavior as compared to when the Forerunners discovered them (they also apparently survived the Halo firing, despite there being no evidence of any Lekgolo preserved to my knowledge, so that speaks volumes right there
