I'm running a game with the flood set to Inactive, and I was assuming that it means "there are no flood planets". And then one of my sloops ran headlong into a planet full of flood and died. Is this a bug, or does "flood inactive" not mean what I think it does?

It means the flood don't ever attack.

it means that the flood are not going to move out and spread, however if you click keep playing after you defeat the enemy you can try to take the planet

“Listen to me, Covenant. I am Vice Admiral  Preston J. Cole commanding the human flagship, Everest You claim to be the holy and glorious inheritors of the universe? I spit on your so-called holiness. You dare judge us unfit? After I have personally sent more than three hundred of your vainglorious ships to hell? After kicking your collective butts off Harvest - not once - but twice? From where I sit, we are the worthy inheritors. You think otherwise, you can come and try to prove me wrong. Is that the best you can do? Watch what one unworthy human can do!”

Not sure how this deserves a like, but I'll take it.

Probably because you answered the question correctly and maturely. In other words, did what the community is supposed to.

@OP:

Flood inactive means just that, they're inactive and won't attack you. But if you seek them out........

We need the flood world to exist, regardless of whether or not they're active, because that's just how Sins works.

i learned the hard way that the flood can take over Capital ships and therefore only attack when i have over 60 stalwarts...

If you want to see scary when it comes to the flood, ask Sloose and Cole about their "contingency plan" whenever they're about to lose in a game

Does what work? I'm really curious now. Can someone care to explain this  "contingency plan" ?

Oh, ok.

Now I kinda feel silly for building anchor stations, minefields, and ODPs on every planet bordering the flood world.

The bug was called Spring Contingency, a play on the UNSC's Winter Contingency. What would happen is if you bombard and kill the Flood Home-world before you clear out its defending Guardians, the Guardians would re-colonize the Flood Home-world. The problem being is that their colonize ability is special because it spawns an active Flood fleet as well as colonize the planet. The spawned Flood fleet behaves like it would if the Flood was active and begins to attack other players.

This video is a perfect example of the bug.

The bug was patched in the latest release.

That was an accidental Spring Contingency. Intentional ones are much more amusing.
