After finishing Ghosts of Onyx for the millionth time, I realized that a small cluster of onyx sentinels would make a very interesting NPC enemy. Individually, they could be the weakest things in the game (how small can you make a ship in Sins?), but they could have cumulative buffs, where more sentinels = more HP, more damage etc. If you use this for the Forerunner faction, they could be a beast against the flood, considering they cant be captured (how can a 3-foot robot be captured?), and that there could be hundreds of them in a cluster. There is another way to implement this, however. You can make a single tiny onyx sentinel a cap ship, that can deploy many fighter replicas of itself. As its level increases, it can deploy more onyx sentinels, and buff them with HP and damage buffs. Special abilities, like the "slip-space capture" ability, that could be used to teleport fleeing ships into the center of the cluster would be interesting, if its even possible.
