My other two forums have never suffered from spams.
 
They're much larger and have far more traffic too.

Not exactly. It's hard to prevent spam on an open forum, unless you recommend closing off the forum.

Which is not something that's gonna happen.

Well it depends on what the source of the spam was. If it was human-made, it's gonna be almost impossible to prevent, aside from banning whole blocks of IP addresses or something.

New Captcha method? When it happens again.

Won't work. These days, when someone finds another method to build captchas, anyone wishing to break them has two options: Either they add a few 100k perceptrons to their neural networks and let computers do the work, or they just hire a 100k human captcha solvers in a low wage country. And yes, that is exactly how it is done these days. In some countries, humans are just that cheap.
