Like the thread title says, the best way (in my opinion others may disagree though) to reduce the effectiveness of nukes it to just micro your damn fleet! I can't tell you how many times I have seen a player lose a massive fleet to a single nuke just because they are all clumped together and the player doesn't bother dividing them into smaller control groups and then assigning them different angles of attack that would effectively make a nuke do a fraction of the damage it would have. Granted that their could be more than one nuclear capable ship in the opposing fleet but that only means to divide your fleet up more and attack them from different angles so they are taking damage regardless of the few ships you lose a in a single control group. Once the the nuclear ships are dealt with then you can reunite your fleet and remove the remaining enemy ships (don't forget to make sure you keep enough Mako's alive to deal with enemy fighters and bombers). Now then, if there are just too many opposing nuclear capable ships well then there is an answer to that as well, (although more micro would be required so if your not good micro in the first place I would advise a divided retreat so the nukes don't kill all your retreating ships at once), all you would need to do is divide your ships even more send a few control groups out to harass and snipe (or at least severely damage) the enemy capital ships to force them to pull them back and while that happens get the majority of your fleet away, or if reinforcements are coming then have them continue to harass the capital ships making dealing with them a much easier task when your reinforcements (or allies) come to the fight.

If you want to remove the nuke threat, bomber rush/focus attacks on the enemy capital ships, nuke threat gone. Orions are very good for the second option. It is literally as simple as that.

Good point. Although the rush may not work though if the opposing player has enough fighter cover and Mako's. The sole reason for the fleet divisions is just an added pre-caution in case a capital ship manages to get in range of the fleet, rather than killing dozens of ships it will only kill a handful. Plus maneuvering your ships around in organized groups makes you feel a level 9000 badass admiral.

The problem with this is that you are letting your opponent fire a nuke ;)

1. Smart AI Orions plus the longest range frigates/cruisers in game.
2. Focus fire on enemy capital
3. ???
4. Profit.

usually because your fleet is staggered and by the time the caps reach the range of the nukes to take out the juicy ball of ships you have it is destroyed either by strikecraft or just the mac fire from the numerous other ships you have.

Yep. Long range destruction works every time against the UNSC.

Although I do remember the odd time a fleet jumped into a grav well landing close enough to your fleet to launch a few nukes but that only happened a couple times.

I think that at that point i fired enough MAC rounds and archers to destroy that fleet

The macs were fired but you lost quite a lot of ships still.

Indeed. I remember during a regular match of sins I had a capital ship that lasted from the start all the way through a 5 hour game. While I like to think that it survived because i kept it safe i know it was because it was a capital ship was just so much more powerful so it wouldnt die unless it was focused fired for a while. You could literally also have frigates (not the starter ones though) and cruisers that would live through an entire match or through most of it.
