One of the capital ships ( I forget which and can't look it up right now ) has an ability to convert enemy ships to friendlies. While it is an interesting idea, the execution seems like it could be improved. 

 

Here is my suggestion: replace the ability with one that creates a fighter squadron ( with the aesthetics of a group of Pelicans ) that can use the takeover ability. This makes the process more realistic, the squadron has a chance to be destroyed before taking control and can preform the takeover outside the capital's range.

I could see it working with firing a particle at the ship it targets, and then having a delay of the ability taking effect, i could look into it after the patch. However, spawning in a ship/squadron to capture something that would then be destroyed... sounds tricky to do

Well, the SoA 2 guys managed it with the Borg. The Borg hangar defense spawns these missiles that apparently have a chance at converting enemy ships into Borg control. The idea is pretty good, to me.

I don't know much about programming, but wouldn't it be similar to the Advent's mine/fighters?

no, those are units with an ability that works like the starbase constructor. what you described in the original post is something that can be done better through a  particle, due to simplicity. That being said, it might be best to revisit this once the next patch is out

Or you could use the InstantAction:

ApplyBuffToTargetWithEntryVehicles
instantActionTriggerType: Condition
buffType: Entity
targetFilter
range: GenericLevel
entryVehicleType: Entity
numEntryVehicles: GenericLevel
travelTime: Decimal
entryVehicleLaunchInfo: effectInfo

Which is basically the colonize effect.

I like this idea. We've talked about it previously, but it never went anywhere.
