In the few battles i've had with "wild" covenant, the balance between UNSC and Covenant ships seems pretty good. Alien ships have enough defenses to hold up against the powerful MACs but do not obliterate the human ships. The heavy offense vs heavy defense plays very well. The issue that I am beging to see is when humans fight humans and aliens fight aliens. UNSC ships are glass cannons and will reduce each other's massive fleets to a few units in less than a minute. Inversly, a single battle between 2 Covenant fleets may take several minutes because their weapons are not as powerful (this is strictly based from neutral ships found in asteroid fields). This could lead to 2 Covenant players fighting an early battle and being stalled while UNSC players concor several worlds. I would love to be corrected on this point please.

Actually, covenant have had a complete overhaul, their ships have far less hull strength and their weapons still do significant damage.

Yeah, the Covenant encountered within the public beta are not indicative of the sort of Covenant in recent weeks. They're significantly more vicious now.

 

That being said, I do think that the weakest area of SotP is with mirrored factions. I'll brood over this.

Great post! I've thought a lot about UNSC vs UNSC and Covie on Covie and I just don't see a way around it. WIth the covies, fights take longer, but you're also not losing 2/3 of your fleet in the first salvo.

 

When we move to Rebellion there will be some research choices that will lock out other options, so that will diversify factions a little, but for Entrenchment things are going to be pretty basic, I think.

 

Another thing to keep in mind is that while UNSC mirror fights are faster, they move slower overall, so they can't really apply pressure like the Covenant will be able to...

If a fight broke out with UNSC fleets fighting eachother it would be a short fight.... no shields and a MAC.  think of playing Halo Reach (still not sure if I believe 4 exists) no shields snippers

Theres nothing mirror about the factions anymore really. ive removed alot of utility ships from the Covenant due to lack of use and non canon use. And the covenant have had a major overhaul in terms of health and damage, they actually kill each other as fast as they would UNSC ships

Thank you for your answer. Another item i wanted to clarify is the damage listed for the Mac and Archer missles. They do not seem acurate because Charon frigates have 400 hull but die from a single 50 damage Mac. Is the damage listed for missles per missle or per salvo?

thats the damage per second. Actual MAC damage per shot is 500 for single barreled ships, and ships that have double barreled MACs do 1000 per shot

Kind of....it takes the damage each shot does, and then takes how long in between each shot, and calculates how much damage per second you're actually doing. So in the case of the Charon it does 500 damage, but it takes 16 seconds between shots, so you take 500/16 and you get 31.25, which is the base Charon DPS (Damage per second). But in reality, the 500 damage is not distributed over the 16 seconds, it's all applied at once, upon impact, and the rest of the time no damage is being done.

To clarify. Yes your fights with the UNSC vs UNSC will be short ish. A major overhaul occured but most fights should take approx 1 min to fully resolve. Covenant health and damage was completely overhauled to so they are more canon. Everything is better.

I really want to see massively superior covenant against humans whose only advantage is sheer numbers and cheap manufacturing costs. Probably not canon, but I want to see one strategy game with slightly imbalanced teams.
