Thank you moustachio, for reassuring me im not the only one who thinks frigate spam and other things like it are strange and feel stupid to use.

I'll give you strange, though I wouldn't say stupid. If you win, you win. Lavo is a hardcore player and knows how to give you one until your eyes water (I'm told), I technically suck at the game and lose to hard AI 95% of the time (won a 3v3 today though, I'm getting better). But I have fun while I'm at it. I'm also a sucker for backstory and lore so I try and create situations which feel 'Halo-y'; hence my fixation on smaller fleet battles. It's just a damn shame the AI doesn't play ball all the time.

If you want to win. Follow Lavo's and people like him's advice. I would make no bones about that.

I'm wondering about everyone's strategy for defence. My modus operandi is to box my planet in with a closely packed SMAC wall and put important stuff such as repair yards and defence coordinators behind them, and buff the SMACS with a stupid amount of Sabres from my Anchor Station. This seems to work fairly well against the AI, but I'm not sure how it would go up against a human player...

In the past I've been guilty of the odd frigate spam but only in the means of taking a flood world, its the cheapest quickest method.the fleet of frigates act as a buffer of inexpensive cannon fodder as its also the numbers that beat the odds that the flood capture one of yours for every 6 or so you destroy I tried it once before with a well balanced capital fleet and lets just say it was like handing over my car keys, , it hurts trying to do that with your prized capital ships as they are also harder to replace,

But as far as a standard ship to ship battle goes diversity is key and using each ships classes strengths at there best, I guess the essence of this method can be better explained from this quote-

"If we all reacted the same way, we'd be predictable, and there's always more than one way to view a situation. What's true for the group is also true for the individual. It's simple: Overspecialize, and you breed in weakness. It's slow death."

Bonus points if you can name where that's from.

Yes Frigate spam is semi viable. In a UNSC v UNSC match up it can be countered by bringing heavier ships into play such as the thanny or marathon/halcyon. We have moved things around on the covenant side and have removed a few UNSC things to make the frigate spam less effective against covenant. We basically gave them the counter to it. We are working on the details and I hope to figure out a patch before that tourney to fix things like the mother of invention

I'm Pretty unoriginal in my strategies. When defending I keep my ships near my SMAC defenses, and when attacking I just throw out nukes until the opposing force is crippled and drifting about. Also when in contested territory I lock down my planets with smacs and mines asap. I won't move my fleet from the planet until it can stand on its own. Too many assaults have failed because the AI came in and bombed out my foot-hold planet in its system.

I suck immensely at SotP because I always get lazy and I'm supremely forgetful. I have only ever won a single game on Hard, and that was because the AI sent its fleet (which I thought was going to ass-invade my home planet) through a flood world and it got annihilated. I capitalised and sent the biggest fleet I had to stomp their home planet (also a lucky coincidence I had my fleet relatively close). On Hard I have no problem with frigate spamming. I play that shit to win. On Normal or Easy, I usually try to build fleets consistent with the lore. They look like roughly this:

UNSC

Early Game: 1xPhoenix, 10-15xParis, 3xMako, 2xCharon.

Mid Game: 1xBest Capital Available, (sometimes) 1xPhoenix, 20xParis, 5xMako, 5xCharon, 2xEion, 3xHalcyon.

Late Game: 1xMarathon, 1xAthens, 25xParis, 5xMako, 5xCharon, 3-4xEion, 4xHalcyon.

Covenant

More simple I suppose. I just keep as large a mix as possible of the best Capital ships I can get, a core of CCS and CPV (think thats what they are called, the bombarment ones) and a fair spammage of CAS. Sometimes I mix in some Corvettes. Although when fighting the UNSC I usually get a load of pickets and throw the in to soak up the AI's Phase 1. Then move in with my heavies and cause mayhem. Fighter harass works well also.

Sounds good. Not too long ago I actually beat the flood, only to be wiped out by the Covenant. T'was a day of mixed emotions.

With Covvie fleets I would seriously reccomend the SDV (anti-strikecraft) as Covenant ships, unlike UNSC ones, suck at taking out the fighters and bombers by themselves.

How to conquer the UNSC AI on any difficulty: spam CAS, CCS, And SDV, that is all.

UNSC fleet composition for me:

Early game:

- 1 Phoenix

- 15-20 Paris

Mid game:

- 1 Phoenix

- 20-30 Paris

- 10 Charon

- 10 Thanatos

- 2-3 Marathons

- 1 Autumn

- 1 Valiant

- 1 Cradle

Late game:

- 1 Phoenix

- 1 Athena

- 1 Thermophilae

- 1 Valiant

- 2 Orions

- 5 Autumns

- 10 Marathons

- 20 Thanatos

- 40 Paris

- 10 Charons

- 1 Cradle

With the late game fleet combination you'll be able to beat very large Covenant fleets with a lot of CCS battlecruisers. I was able to beat a fleet of 200+ covenant ships out of which 30 or so were CCS, but after loosing almost 80% of my fleet. Make sure you have your Shiva upgrades done and put in autocast mode. Detonations from 10+ Shivas in the middle of the enemy ranks -> bad news for them.
