You may have misunderstood, its a discussion about when the time comes and the MC story arc was to end, what would be the best way to do it, least thats how I interpret it.

For someone who was made into the perfect soldier who would not know how to be anything else wouldn't the worse thing be retirement, a warrior without a war?
thought I might post my entry for the wiki here-
Personally I think the ideal ending would be to solve the greater threat from within, the story could come to a head with the Insurrectionists and the UNSC in a final all of nothing battle were the Master Chief would sacrifice himself to become a catylist for the begining of a new era of peace and as long as they remember him their would be no further conflict and the human race would be united as one. This would be more meaningful that just defeating another alien threat.

Didn't realise their was a potential civil war in Mass Effect, or do you mean the whole convince the bad guy hes bad by killing yourself?

I think that IF he dies, it should be in about the 2580s, saving humanity one last time. But. In the future games it shows a pair of new monitors (Chief and Cortana) who were saved from destruction by the Holo-brarian.
