Backstory (based on Civilization: Beyond Earth leader interviews)

France, Spain, and Portugal incorporate/annex one another, and possibly other Western European countries, becoming Franco-Iberia.

Brazil incorporates/annexes other South American countries, becoming Brasilia.

Great Mistake occurs in central Asia, resulting in nuclear fallout, damage to northern India, and a severe rise of global sea levels.

Northern India becomes the Kavithan Protectorate, and reconstruction efforts are protected by Brasilia peacekeepers.

United States of America, Canada, United Mexican States, People’s Republic of China decline to send peacekeepers.

Warlords in central Asia are removed from power by Brasilia peacekeepers.

UN refugee camps are constructed in central Asia, and guarded by Brasilia peacekeepers.

Korean Crises occur.

South China Sea War occurs.

People’s Republic of China incorporates/annexes other Asian countries, becoming the Pan-Asian Cooperative.

Australia incorporates/annexes other Oceanic countries, becoming the Commonwealth of Polystralia.

Russian Federation oil supply is exhausted, resulting in deaths from hypothermia throughout Eurasia.

Russian Federation incorporates/annexes other Eastern European countries, becoming the Slavic Federation.

Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, Kenya, and possibly other African countries are incorporated/annexed into the People’s African Union.

United States of America survives the Great Mistake.

American Reclamation Corporation begins the Trans-Mississippi Recovery Initiative.

Slavic Federation establishes the first extra-terrestrial human colony.

Slavic Federation explores the Kuiper belt.

Commission Report on the Inflection Point presents empirical evidence that the human race has reached the Inflection Point, a threshold where humanity will soon no longer possess the means to sustain high standards of living, or a program of viable extrasolar colonization.

Franco-Iberia publishes the Canon, a multi-cultural compilation of writing, art, and philosophy from throughout the historical record.

January 1, 2210: Slavic Federation declares its first Seeding venture.

June 10, 2210: Brasilia commits its peacekeeping forces to launching the first Seeding venture.

August 23, 2216: American Reclamation Corporation announces its first Seeding venture. United States Congress declines to allow American Reclamation Corporation to represent the United States Government in space colonization.

Franco-Ibera launches its first Seeding venture.

Beyond Earth Campaign Timeline (written by myself, greatly aided by Halopedia)

Brasilia establishes the first Seeding colony.

Slavic Federation establishes its first Seeding colony.

American Reclamation Corporation establishes its first Seeding colony.

Franco-Iberia establishes its first Seeding colony.

Commonwealth of Polystralia establishes its first Seeding colony.

Pan-Asian Cooperative establishes its first Seeding colony.

People’s African Union establishes its first Seeding colony.

Kavithan Protectorate establishes its first Seeding colony.

Kavithan colony strongly influences Slavic colony through its preachers.

Franco-Iberia colony denounces Kavithan preachers.

People’s African Union (on Earth) meets less than half of Pan-Asian Cooperative contract quotas.

Pan-Asian Cooperative invades People’s African Union.

Pan-Asian colony invades People’s African colony.

Brasilia colony allies with People’s African colony, declares war on Pan-Asian colony.

Kavithan colony invades Franco-Iberia colony, attempts to destroy the Canon.

Brasilia colony allies with Franco-Iberia colony, declares war on Kavithan colony.

Slavic colony allies with Kavithan colony and Pan-Asian colony; declares war on Brasilia colony, Franco-Iberia colony, and People’s African colony. Emulating the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the Cooperative is formed.

Polystralia colony remains neutral.

American colony allies with Brasilia colony, Franco-Iberia colony, and People’s African colony; declares war on Slavic colony, Kavithan colony, and Pan-Asian colony. Emulating the North American Treaty Organization, the United Nations Space Command (UNSC) is formed.

Callisto Treaty ratified, the Cooperative surrenders to the UNSC.

United States of America incorporates/annexes Canada and the United Mexican States, becoming the United Republic of North America.

United Nations establishes the Unified Earth Government (UEG), incorporating Earth’s countries and the extra-terrestrial colonies in a supranational and interplanetary unitary republic. The Armed Forces of the Unified Earth Government is the UNSC.

2291: Shaw-Fujikawa Translight Engine invented.

2310: UEG creates the Colonial Administration Authority and the Colonial Military Administration to govern and police extra-terrestrial colonies.

2362: Odyssey, the first interstellar colony ship, colonizes the Epsilon Eridani system, creating the first Inner Colonies.

Reach, Epsilon Eridani becomes the primary UNSC military headquarters.

Outer Colonies are established.

Severe economic and political inequality results in most of the Outer Colonies’ residents supporting the Insurrection, an open rebellion against the UEG.

2491: Carver Findings conclude the Insurrection will result in the collapse of the UEG and the destruction of human civilization.

2511: UNSC Office of Naval Intelligence initiates the SPARTAN-II program, kidnapping dozens of genetically-ideal children, conditioning them in military training, and subjecting them to extensive, often fatal biological enhancements, in order to subdue the Insurrection and avoid civil war.

October 7, 2525: The Covenant declares war on humanity. Declaring martial law, the UEG cedes its legislative, executive, and judicial powers to the UNSC emergency military government. The UNSC Security Council, composed of the highest-ranking officers from each UNSC service branch, becomes the legal authority of the UEG.

SPARTAN-II program is re-tasked from the Insurrection to engage the Covenant, and is highly effective in ground combat.

2530: UNSC nuclear stockpile is near depletion, and most Outer Colonies are destroyed. Cole Protocol General Order, punishable by death, requires retreating human spacecraft to avoid population centers, or, in the face of imminent capture, the destruction of all data before self-destructing.

2552: Most Inner Colonies are destroyed. All SPARTAN-II units are recalled to Reach for Operation Red Flag, a mission to locate the Covenant home-world and capture a Prophet, in order to force the Covenant into a cease-fire.

August 30, 2552: Reach, the largest UNSC fleet, and most SPARTAN-II units are destroyed by the Covenant.

All remaining UNSC forces retreat to Earth, and concentrate defenses around orbital elevators.

September 19-22, 2552: UNSC Pillar of Autumn discovers the Halo Array, the Flood, and captures substantial amounts of Covenant technology.

Unit commanded by SPARTAN-II Master Chief Petty Officer John-117 returns to Earth.

October 20, 2552: Covenant fleet is detected near Jupiter’s moon Io.

Covenant fleet approaches Earth.

What is the Inflection Point? (A real-world answer)

“First of all, we can rigorously define periods of progress (accelerated complexity-entropy growth) and decline (relative stagnation of complexity development) constituting respectively the steep rise and plateau (saturation) of each discrete step of system complexity development. Whereas entropy can only grow for both progress and decline, acceleration of dynamic entropy growth, or the power of development, is positive for progress (creative development), and negative for decline (decay, degradation).

“Points of inflection of the entropy growth curve separate adjacent periods of progress and decline and correspond, at the same time, to maximum (final) progress results (“point of happiness”), and maximum decay (“point of sadness/ennui”). One can also define the moment of culmination of a step-wise complexity increase, progressive transition climax, or the moment of truth, as the point of inflection (emphasis mine), after which progressive complexity-entropy upgrade becomes eminent and irreversible.

“In a similar way, a critical inflection point (emphasis mine) within the period of decline, or the moment of sin, marks the definite establishment of stagnation and decay. Whereas the points of happiness and sadness separate the periods of growth and decline as such, the moments of truth and sin, situated in the middle of progress and decline periods, separate intervals of maximum subjective perception of their results within the system. We can see that such “vague” and “inexact” notions as happiness, sorrow, and “psychological crises” between them are provided with unambiguous and rigorous definitions within the unreduced complexity concept…” (Vladimir Burdyuzha, The Future of Life and the Future of our Civilization, p. 421-422)
