Machiavelli's The Prince is a fantastic read! It has some incredibly interesting, and at times wonderfully satirical, concepts and ideas within it.

Machiavelli's The Prince is a fantastic read! It has some incredibly interesting, and at times wonderfully satirical, concepts and ideas within it.

I can only reiterate this, deffinately worth a read. Though I disagree the ideas are satirical, Machiavelli actually pronounces a very 'grounded' way of approaching governing and goverment. Especially in comparison to say Erasmus' idea of good government (and all corresponding ethics). 

 

So is this a 'classial' literature thread, or just a thread for all things literature?

I'm reading Broken Circle now, but if anyone is interested in classical warfare, then I'd suggest you to read "The Greatest Battles of Ancient Rome", if you can find it in English (it shouldn't be too hard). By Andrea Frediani, a great historian, it talks about all the major battles that Rome fought - but if you seek the destruction of Carthage, you won't find it there: in that books there are the most important, fate-deciding battles that Rome fought; the Third Punic War was merely a show of power from Rome, nothing interesting happened.

 

It's also really accurate to the particulars, and those of you that played Rome II and looked at some detail will find correspondence. It also describes the reasons and outcome of the battle, so it's not just a battle description.
