Grunt, I played until my 360 died, and I have no idea what the fuck you're talking about with the shooting and such in 2.

Shoot an enemy in bf2. Watch him fall flat on the ground, and see intense rigor mortis kick in, causing his body to remain stiff, regardless of what happens. Laugh.

That's what he means by janky...

The draw distance was amazingly bad as well. After a certain point people would stop animating and just slide along the ground.

Don't get me wrong though, I played the hell outta BF II. Loved that game

Let's be honest here, and take off our rose tinted glasses. Battlefront II was a great game. But it had a few shortcomings. First off, it was basically Battlefield with the StarWars theme painted on. Secondly the actual gameplay, I'm talking about shooting stuff, movement, you know, the basics, were pretty jank. Not well polished, and the only reason we put up with it was it's GODAMN STARWARS. Thirdly the balance was....... meh, some maps where awfully balanced if I remember correctly.

The theme carried that game, without the theme it would have been a less than stellar Battlefield clone with a few decent ideas. Those ideas being (and coincidently the best parts of the game for me): Galactic conquest, space battles, and heroes.

Yes I've played the new Battlefront beta and it's pretty good from what I've seen. The graphics and particle effects are spot on, it runs surprisingly smoothly (PC) given it's listed min requirements. The load times aren't nearly as bad as they were in BF4 and BF3. Sound design, is holyshit batman this is the best omg yesyesyesyesyes. Play this game with headphones and you'll not be disappointed, DICE makes incredible sound design and this is no exception. Running around on ground level while an AT-ST walks past blasting everything away and hearing a Tie Fighter screeching past, as you deploy a Squad Shield and listen to the laser blasts ping off the shield while everything gets muffled from outside the shield is, is, it's just the best ok. The shooting and movement is smooth as butter and the power up system for getting rockets and vehicles is interesting.

However, the leveling system is, well I don't care for it. The flying is a mixed bag IMO, and Hoth is, well it's a bit unbalanced. The leveling system is far too tedious, you have to reach a certain level, then spend an ingame currency to unlock it as well? That's far too finicky and annoying. Flying, oh boy flying. I'm a bit conflicted to be honest, as on PC it's basically mouse aim from Warthunder, with a weird amount of mouse acceleration (this is true for all vehicles/turrets) which I'm guessing was done to keep people from being ungodly accurate with vehicles (assumption on my part). Dogfights tend to boil down to numbers, and who gets on whose tail first (basically every battlefield/battlefront ever). I mean the maneuver buttons (F1,F2,F3) kinda help, but if someone's behind you, they typically just delay the inevitable, which is you dying (unless you're in a Tie Fighter). So all in all it's ok, I guess. The fact that, by default on PC, it's mouse aim, keeps the barrier to entry as low as possible for flying is definitely a plus, but it feels a bit jank due to the mouse acceleration (once you get used to it, you can still be quite accurate).

Hoth is weird. From my experience the Rebels will only win under 2 somewhat similar conditions. One is the the Empire team is stupid as balls or just plain bad. The other is if the Rebels spawn as fast as possible when the match first loads and take the first uplinks and dig in before the Imps spawn in, this typically paves the way for the rest of the match. If those 2 things don't happen then the Empire wins almost hands down. The Empire spawns too close to the first uplinks imo, and depending on when the bulk of your team spawns can heavily influence the rest of the match. The Rebels air pickups are more or less on the Imperial side of the map, and one has no cover around it, making them extremely difficult to get (and without air support the AT-ST's will wreck as people don't equip Ion Grenades or Shot). All the Imps pick ups are clearly on their side of the map making it easy for them to pickup so... just... wtf.

The other mode is basically KoTH. Meh.

At the end of the day it's not JUST Battlefield with a SW skin, and I'm ok with that.

I agree with everything, but honestly that doesn't relate to my post.

I loved the Beta as much as you did, but even the amazing sound won't suffice the loss of flying out of your Star Destroyer with a couple of your teammates and boarding a Rebel Alliance's cruiser.

Yes, it feels smoother, but BF II wasn't as junky as you describe. It was just an old game on an old console.

What I am trying to say is that I wholeheartedly agree that BattleFront will be a good game, with excellent characteristics, but it won't be better than BF II overall.

Unless they'll release a Galactic Conquest mode post-release, in which case, then it will gain some points (note that it shouldn't be released as a DLC, but I get the necessity of releasing a Star Wars game months before the new, highly anticipated movie releases).

Overall, BF II will be better in my opinion.

This is my problem with BF Dice edition. It feels as though they rushed it out to cash in on Ep VII hype.

For my money's worth. I don't think we'll ever see GC in the new game. It doesn't mesh with DICE's way of doing things, which is a damned shame but I can actually live with it (make me a new Empire at War to compensate though... please?). You're actually dead right about BFII being actually mechanically a pretty average (I won't say terrible) game, its popularity is somewhat inexplicable but my GOD was it popular. I must have played more time on that than the rest of my games combined. The new Beta does actually capture some of that, as I've said before, its so goddamn immersive and organic it trumps everything I've pretty much ever played for 'feel'. Levelling system, is clunky. I agree. I like the cards, I don't buy into the two-layered unlock system particularly but I can put that to one side. My only hope is that the number of unlocks and pick-ups will be increased somewhat by true release, I'm fairly certain they will for the unlocks but the pick-ups I'm afraid we've seen all we're going to see which I'm a bit worried about. Five or six power-ups is too few to make a game truly interesting, especially when you're like me and they're kinda your focal point (same with kill-streaks on COD, they were always my focus in game).

And by the way, if you didn't like flying with the mouse in the beta, try it in PC BFII, the controls are BORKED man. Basically unflyable.

My one wish, my true wish. Is that DICE would make one, simple design choice:

Anyone play BF2142?

Titan Assault.

Titan Assault would be downright PERFECT for Battlefront. Hell it would only NEED to be a reskin. Replace the Titans with the capital ships and you have basically what looks like that mode from the cancelled BFIII game that everyone wanted (combining land and space battles). I swear to god they are missing possibly one of the biggest opportunities of all gaming history if they don't manage to put it in. As far as I'm concerned it would please everyone, it would work perfectly with the basic game concepts (basically the space battles from II that everyone wants, but with MOAR happening), it's a tried and tested gametype and it would make up for carrier assault being such a limp heir to the Titan Assault throne. Hell, I'm upset with the current pricing (it is the only thing stopping me from buying the game as I type) but I'd snap this up as DLC in a heartbeat. It just feels like a match made in heaven.

But does that make it worth a £43.99 pre-order price, then after that a £40! £40 fucking pounds worth of DLC in the form of a season pass. £40!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They're effectively releasing a full game and charging you more for the rest of the content. (And to be fair, with SWBF II, at least you got exactly what you payed for)

As has been said, this was just from being an old game on an old console. Although the graphics and physics were really janky.

However, the only problems with gameplay were the AI and certain maps. Biggest one being Polis Massa GCW Era. As Imps I could get 80+ kils and 3 deaths and lose, while as Rebs I could get 3 kills and 10 deaths and win.

Death Star was worse - every Imperial kill counts as 2 reinforcements for the Rebs. Same with Republic v CIS

And it may be from being an old game, but there are older games that did a better job. I never played BFII on any consoles, old or not though....

Not at all. Preorder bullshit rarely makes me want to preorder a game, with very few exceptions (Witcher 3, no bullshit, just a $15 price drop for preorders). The SW beta left me pleasantly surprised. I personally had very little faith that EA would give DICE the amount of time to actually finish this thing (remember BF4?). But still, I will wait until after release to see if there's enough content to justify a $60 game.
