Firing at multiple targets. (spead out fire)

I have noticed that quite often my fleet will tend to completely OVERKILL a couple of ships in an opposing fleet rather than spreading there mac fire to cover and kill multiple targets, for instance 10 macs will slam into a light frigate which is just a waste.
Now this isn't as much of a big deal with UNSC vs UNSC fights but, from what I have heard the UNSC will have to greatly out number the covenant to win a fight. Now having this overkill of fire on single targets could be a massive issue with the covenant since they will be outnumbered (but not out gunned) most of the time.
So . . . is there a way to have the ai of your ships evenly distribute there fire according to the strength of the ship they target? For instance only a few macs will target a light frigate while a bunch would fire at the heavy capital classes. Or at least give the covenant more area of affect attacks to cover against the large numbers of unsc.
Also, I have tried to use uber micro to avoid overkill but sometimes since the ship ai is so slow they will get confused or set back right after they kill a target that I directly sent them to attack, they will just sit there for a few seconds not sure what to do. It sucks, the ai in this game seem to be designed for longer drawn out fights not the fast paced action of sotp :/

It's a sins problem and if I recall correctly there is nothing the mod team can do about it.
Yeah I figured that, than I guess they will just have to add a lot of aoe attacks to the covie ships.

Here's what Unikraken has to say about it:
I didn't read anything in here beyond the first post. UNSC ships do not focus fire. What you saw was either me or Canada specifically ordering ships to fire on one target, or one of us simply outnumbered the other enough that more than one ship got it. You also need to understand that they fire on the first thing to come into range, and that's not changeable. So if only 5 ships get in range then 40 ships will gang rape them until the others move up.
Also this on making them reacquire new targets, from a different thread where a guy was complaining about fleets targeting enemy fleets exiting slipspace:
First off, I'm going to assume you're a non-native English speaker and not harass you for your terrible grammar and spelling. The targeting issue is not something we can do anything about. Ships target the first enemy they see and when ships jump in in a hodgepodge manner only one ship is going to show up first, so everyone is going to try to kill that ship first. However, there is a fairly simple way around this Sins hiccup. They only targeted that ship first because it was the first one to jump in, now there are more targets. What I do is hit the "stop" button and they'll immediately reacquire new targets from the enemies available.
As Despoiler said, we can't change it, but this is how you can deal with it.

I'd say you'd want to focus fire on covenant ships. First aim for the stronger ships then the weaker if you have the chance. Yes aoe is helpful, but more so to the UNSC, do to the massive amount of ships and how nimble they are.
