What does mass reduction do on the research tree?

Searching around the Internet, no one's come up with a clear answer, besides the fact that it reduces the mass value of the ship in question. This probably increases the maxAccelerationLinear, maxAccelerationStrafe, maxDecelerationLinear, maxAccelerationAngular, and maxDecelerationAngular enumerations, and most people that have investigated it agree. Basically ships can change their velocity more quickly. Also, ships move more slowly traveling away from the center of a gravity well, and move more quickly traveling toward the center of a gravity well, so I imagine the lower the mass, the closer their velocities to and from the center of the gravity well would be.

Makes more sense now. My thoughts were completely wrong; thanks for clearing that up.
