From what ive seen, the best fleet to have is one that has the biggest variety of ships possible, with about 2/3s of the fleet being frigates for cannon fodder, and the rest being cruisers and capital ships for heavy hitting. For specific numbers, its best to just try out a few fleets of your own and see what works best for your play style.

The cannon fodder is the necessary requirement. After that some tend to use a more carrier oriented fleet or battle line (cruiser) oriented fleet. One of those two fleets kept inline with frigates for cannon fodder should do the trick. If not a mix between the two.

The best fleet to have is the one that wins. Also fully upgrade range increase isn't a bad thing to have.

Oh, hell yes. Upgraded range plus smart AI, sometimes you can get two volleys off before the enemy is in range

Even better when you have enough firepower and range to make sure they can't even make a shot.

Imagine 2 volleys from 300 ships... Yeah, they arent going to be able to fire a shot.

In the newest version being released soon carriers have been nerfed and destroyers have been buffed. Generally you want a lot of frigates, some destroyers, and some cruisers.

Prowlers...lots and lots of prowlers....

I kid, the best fleet is roughly 50% frigates (mostly as cannon fodder but their Charon "new blood" ability is nice, then mix in destroyers and cruisers with some carrier support as well as a few AA ships if capital ships can be thrown into the mix as well then definitely aim for either an Orion or you could switch out the carrier support by using a Thermopylae or an Athens class carrier.
