With the rebellion expansion (or the extra planets stuff) you get to pick a type of world.

One idea for the UNSC is to have fortress worlds and industry worlds.

The idea for the fortress planets is to take away a couple of the slots for trade and whatnot and add a tonne of extra slots for tactical stuff (like SMAC's)

And it would be precisely the opposite for the Industry planets.

Another thing would be havering an added population bonus for both types of planet (as you would need extra populations to support both types of planets)

(I'm sorry if this has been done before)

If you're referring to social specialzation, you can't do that sort of stuff with it. If you mean actual new planets, this could certainly be done, even for Entrenchment.

The game has a handful of planet types by default: Terran, Ice, Volcanic, Desert, Asteroid, Invalid [this one does work with research], and Uncolonizable. In addition you can put in a single custom planet type that the game will accept, though it will throw an error on boot about it (this is how Sins Plus dealt with gas giants). That's 8 planet groups right there. Rebellion adds Moon, and the DLC adds Oceanic, Iron, Greenhouse, and Barren types.

Which have been modded in since the game was first starting to be modded.

That being said, we could probably add those into the version we have now. The inclusion of them as official DLC is a little vexing, though. Not sure if we should wait for it in Rebellion or whatever.

No reason to worry, planet mods have been around since Ent. I mean Novus Universum, the planet mod integrated into SoGE, is on Ent.
