Build them near your planet so they can profit from their range. Make one to three anti-fighter hangars to fend of bombers and you should be fine

I do that and I build two anti-fighter hangars, yet they still get taken out easily.

SMACs are a major supplement to defences but are not necessarily designed to hold an entire system against a full-scale invasion. Much less a covenant one. SMACs should be used primarily to prevent planetary bombardment and safeguard valuable structures, and used secondarily as a punishing defensive weapon. You'll find even a large, sturdy SMAC wall will be defeated by a dedicated invasion force as per lore. SMACs need to be backed up by at least a small task force, nothing more expensive than Thanatos and marathon cruisers, the key is using an anchor station to get the fleet and replenish it, distracting the invaders, as well as to house a billion sabres, because those things are underrated.

SMAC building will become much more tactical in the next release anyhow, forcing you to really think about how, where and when to build your defences.

I prefer to have a mobile defense force near my vulnerable systems rather than entrenching everything.

On defense I build something on choke points and major planets (Home planet, Military ship yard planet.. and so on).

That + early detection research makes it easy to fend of invaders

I have a question about the Forerunner ships, will there be a formation where you get multiple Forerunner ships together and fire a single beam?

We can give them a buff where the more sentinels you have in close proximity the more damage they do but that isn't a single beam.

and that would be so OP you would need about 100 nerf hammers

Would be more balanced if they were to make it a research where the weakest of forerunner ship classes like the sentinels get a very small buff similar to the new blood research where the more there are in a grav well the more co-ordinated they would be leading to increased accuracy or something that has to deal their movement rather than firepower (assuming it isn't already put in there but I am sure defender has something similar to it in place already). Similar to the Geth from Mass Effect I guess.

Look at a wormholes defense fleet, thats less sentinels than a smart forerunner player will end up using at the start of the game

To be honest though, all you need to clear wormholes are a handful of AA ships and about a dozen or so frigates. Or just send in a few AA frigates and like 7 destroyers and you cleared the wormhole.
