What race? What purpose? So many questions. If you're just looking for a solid combat class, as UNSC, Thanatos is a solid choice. As Covenant, you're looking at the CPV or CCS (Covenant late game is more like UNSC in terms of absolute timing, I find).

CPVs have the same damage as a CCS, less hull/shield, but they're cheaper, require less slots and they're produced faster

Marathons are also pretty good + you can research and build it very early. The greatest advantage they have over a Thanatos is the level system which give them more stats. + You can level them up almost instantly with a few coins.
So you just need 3 military research centres while you can focus on your economy more.
Then you can swing out for more devastating ships.
It takes a dwarf to use magma for snow shoveling
Only in Dwarf Fortress would you try to catch a mermaid to butcher her and make trophies out of her bones

Mixture of charons shielded by Halycons if your wanting to feel classy or charons combined with thantos and a Marathon have been my most recent fleet combos that are succesful.

CPVs have the same damage as a CCS
No, they do not. CCS has this fancy thing called an energy projector, it's pretty brutal. That being said, mid-game for Cov where cost can be an issue, the CPV might be your best bet in terms of spamming.
For the UNSC however, the Thanatos plus a small number of Halcyons is your best bet.

As the UNSC, in a mid game I usually find myself obligated to rely on Paris+Thanatos compositions, with some Marathons and Halcyons here and there.
As the Covenant, an often mid game situation is lots of CRS+CPV and as soon as possible CCS (and Pickets depending on the situation). I know they're quite expensive, but hell, they can take a lot of damage before they go down. Oh and very few DDS.

Athens are expensive
Yep.
Thats why i focus on economy first every time. Get the cash coming in and you can build them faster than they are produced.

Mid game eh.
Considerable amount of Paris and Thanatos. Small amount of Halcyons for their fighter bays and good group of Marathons with one or two valiants for the command boost.
Covies, I usually go CPV, some DDS some Pickets for fighter defence. A few CCS if I can afford them.
