Hullo pleb friends! I'm here to talk about fleet compositions.

Now, I create multiple smaller battlegroups. Each battlegroup is identical and each battlegroup is stationed over a planet. One battlegroup per planet.

1x Valliant Super Heavy Cruiser
4x Eion-class light carrier
3x Pre-refit Halcyon-class cruiser (if the battlegroup is to be stationed closer to the frontlines, these will be replaced by Marathon-class cruisers)
6x Thanatos-class destroyer

I love using this style of multiple smaller fleets as it saves on resources and when coupled with every planet's maxed out SMAC grids and minefields has a heavy presence on every world. It also allows me to quickly respond to threats.

I like it, though I've never been too keen on using carriers. Any praticular reason why you chose pre-refit Halcyons?

Fair point, heh. Was just wondering if there was something about them, other than price, that made them more prefferable. Personally I'd take the refit over the standard everytime, if I could.

Thinking about it more, it's probably price and build time since 's got them around every planet he owns... and there goes me answering my own question <_<

Not just price, their slightly higher durability over the Marathons is ideal.

Also I use fighters extensively because they can engage hostile fleets with the SMAC grids before my battlegroup gets within firing range, effectively limiting casualties for me.

Remember the refit is a capital ship, so you can't really build them like you would build frigates. You'll run out of capital ship crews that you could be using to diversify your capital ships.

Agreed, I'll use the Valiant, then later nearing end-game, start using Orions.

This is my current fleet composition:

Battle Group Vengence

10 x Mako Class Corvettes
16 x Charon Class Frigates
30 x Paris Class Frigates
16 x Thantos Class Destroyers
6 x Halcyon Class Cruisers
10 x Marathon Class Cruiser
4 x Eion Class Light Carriers
1 x Valiant Class Heavy Cruiser
2 x Orion Class Battleships
1 x Thermopylae Class Supercarrier
4 x Cradle Refit Stations

It's only been in one large scale engagement and it won easily.

This is what I typically use in my one and only battlegroup:

6x Thermopylae Class Supercarriers
Whatever cannonfodder I can afford after that

The 50-somthing longswords you get from the supercarriers is enough to one-shot pretty much anything, and at max research each Thermopylae can take about 4-5 nukes and around 20 mac rounds. The cannonfodder frigates are just there to impede the enemy progress to the Thermopylaes. Its effectvive enough to take on two player's Main Battle Groups at once. (Their groups consisted of something like 50 halcyon cruisiers and 4 refits plus a couple of orions for the first and 3 valients a pheonix and a ton of cannonfodder frigates for the second)

That makes sense, on both counts. And with a fighter SMAC combo, it will be like having the MAC and the missle aspect of several ships in two different places. Your enemy can take out one, but still have to deal with the other for a while after. And by the time that happens your battlegroup can engage and mop everything up.

I have more experience playing SW: Empire at War mods, they've taught me to favor cruisers and destroyers over carriers. Faster and more manuverable with more direct firepower. Not to mention much less micro managment. Though, from what I've seen here that last one won't be much of a problem, just got to get used to a different play style.

Please, forgive my longwindedness. I like to talk things out, so to speak.

Remember the refit is a capital ship, so you can't really build them like you would build frigates. You'll run out of capital ship crews that you could be using to diversify your capital ships.

Ah, that I forgot about. Apologies, haven't played the mod, yet.

Might have to nerf the supercarrier in light of that. About how long does it take you to get to that point?

I enjoy longer replies Centurian, not to worry.

Also to Ulmont, what happens if you're attacked in multiple positions? I generally don't like one stupidly strong battlegroup for that reason.

Oh yes Centurian, not forgetting they've just jumped into a minefield so have very little room to move without serious consequences.

Indeed I should, it looks like a blast. Alas, I am having technical and monetary difficulties in obtaining Trinity.

Must admit, I'm having difficulty forming a counter-tactic to this. Though, I might have something, it however relies on massive casualties for my side.

I agree, but I'm near my supply limit as it is. If I lose more ships in the next battle I'll replace them with carriers.
