Me and my friends have this discussion about once a week, so I was curious what your opinions on the subject were.

BP2OSy.png

Halo 1 Armor:

Probably the oddest out of the bunch. You can really see the inspirations from Aliens in the general style and especially the eyepiece and helmet. Generally he looks the most sci-fiish out of all five of them, and the metal plates nailed into his arms and legs are a testement to the art direction of Halo 1.

Halo 2 Armor:

Although very different from Halo 1, you can still see the similarities. Instead of metal plate being welded to the Marines body, the Marines now have what looks like kevlar vests over light ceramic armor. I don't see how fabrics will help you much against a plasma bolt but hey, holding shit is cool too. The helmet is almost identical to previous versions except the side has been maded more uniform and the HUD is removed. This is really where we see the armor that will basically be the Marine Corps for the next three or so games come up, and the evolution becomes fairly clear.

Halo 3 Armor:

My personal favorite, this one keeps a lot of the good pieces of both the Halo 1 and 2 armors and throws its own spin on it. The kevlar of Halo 2 is nearly removed entirely and is instead thigh and elbow pads which seem to be made of a rubber substance. The metal armor from Halo 1 sort of makes a return though it looks much more sophisticated and like something a person would actually reasonably use, and if you stretch the imagination you could probably say it helps against plasma to an extent. The camoflauge also comes back, and although pretty much useless, makes it look all the more militaristic. The helmet is probably where we can see the biggest inspiration from Halo 2, remaining largely unchanged besides a bit on the side just as Halo 2's was changed from Halo 1.

Halo Reach / Halo 1 Anniversary Armor:

Basically just the UNSCDF Army armor but made sort of brown and with a visor cause Bungie couldn't give a shit, and then turned back into Army armor for the Marines in Anniversary cause 343 couldn't give a shit. The art direction from the previous three games sort of goes haywire with this one and although we can see the inspiration is there, it looks very different at the same time, the biggest change yet. The helmet has been made much more covering and now covers most of the troopers head, even without the visor. The breastplate from Halo 3 is there with some greebles and some much needed pouches, and the camo is more or less removed in order to allow the Marine to have a white rag stuffed in his pants. Generally just leaves me wondering how much shit he had to stuff in his armor to look as puffed up as he does and how long he has till he overheats.

Halo 4:

And basically they then said fuck it and redid basically everything from scratch, for better or for worse (for worse in my opinion.) the armor drops off from the art direction more or less held up by the previous few games and goes for a much more scifi look, even more than the one from Halo 1. Although this can be excused as the UNSC advancing post war, it's still odd to see them go through such a drastic uniform change with little changes after such a short time. The armor, although clearly not kevlar, is no longer shiney in almost any way and the helmet was donated by a time traveler from the 21st century who decided the UNSC looked too distinct in its helm. I should note the picture is the most decent looking one I could find by the way, as all the other armor designs were so ridiculous that I couldn't be bothered to add them.

Also I just want to bring light to the fact that they brought back the Halo 3 helmet for Halo 4 and it was glorious and then they said fuck it and changed it to what we have now: http://www.halopedia...rine_helmet.jpg

Well according to the halo 4 essential visual guide the equipment varies planet to planet, UNSC marines based on earth had the halo 2. 3 and ODST armour, whereas marines on reach were issued less hi tech equipment halo reach and CEA, but better than the other colonies, as seen in H4. Whereas smaller colonies that have militia, just have webbing and some camouflage.

the reasoning behind this is that should one of the colonies rebel like in the inner colony wars, the more loyal forces based at the inner colonies in the sol and epsilon eridani systems are better equiped resulting in more insurrectionist casualties, and less UNSC casualties.

Halo 3 seems the most likely, i can't trousers that aren't rolled up, and some of the H4 marines look like they're wearing crash helmets rather than battle helmets.

I liked the Halo Reach armor the best. It was a visual remake of Halo 1's armor set, except blended more with the direction Bungie had taken Halo. I'm not sure why they were all wrapped up, though. Even the ODSTs had scarfs. Was Reach a really cold planet?

Neck seal perhaps?

And not necessarily cold, we wore shemaghs all the time in Iraq and Afghanistan. I know people who used to wear a form of mail around their necks.

You forgot this armor:

I think the Halo Wars armor is the best looking, based entirely on the glipses of it in cutscenes.

I think it is reflective more as a cinematic effect. You watch the differnet cutscenes and sometimes it does and sometimes it doens't have the reflectivness.

Halo Wars is by far my favorite. 1st person wise it would be Reach, but the "Marines" in Reach are actually UNSC Army personnel. Reach is largely Army. I think the only part with Marines in Reach is the LNOS sequence. Hence Colonel Holland and not any Naval ranks.

From the actual Marines not from Halo wars, Halo 3/ODST has the best by far.

Also, they use Titanium-A plating for body armor, not Kevlar.

Also, better Halo 4 armor than the one you posted

-snip-

I don't really get why many marines didn't wear armor in Halo 4, like this one. The chest really looks like a modern soldier, with no armor and just those things you can attach things to. (the stripes, I don't know how they're called). They're just awful. I much prefer the Heavy Weapon Specialist variant (the green one with armour on it).

Don't really care much for any of those armors. I'm not a big fan of the look. I feel like the Infonity should have it's own special force anyhow.

Also, where is the intimidation factor in this shit. Boo.

It's a plate carrier, a type of armour, but i'd much rather have plate armour than plate carrier armour, that way you can use your body as a weapon. You mean MOLLE/PLCE/Opsrey tabs, that allow you to attach stuff.

I hated the Heavy weapons helmet. I doubt it would be comfortable at all.

Body as a weapon? You know what hands are right? Doesn't stop you from body slamming anything anyhow.

You know what, do personal energy shields cause burns when touched or do they only activate when a high velocity projective comes in contact with it? I think that's how the Onyx sentinel's shields worked.

No i mean you could hold onto someones head and smash it against your chest, I'm telling you if i had a real life set of ODST armour, i could have killed people body slamming them with it, i have body slammed people with a plate carrier, and it only caused a few cracked ribs.

I'm not sure about that last bit, but i'd say no. Depends if its a soft or hard shield.

A hard shield are like the jackal gauntets where a soft shield is like personal armour that can be moulded around the user.

The hard shield stops everything whereas the soft shield only stops projectiles.

I mean Chief has to walk on the shields in the first book so his kind stays on no matter what. I believe he has to turn it off when he wants to shake someones hands.
I also think it just stops stuff, it doesn't burn. Otherwise water would boil when he falls in it.

You clearly never played Sierra 117. If memory serves correct Charlie Foxtrot was the checkpoint. Nothing more fun than turning catch on and dodging plasma grenades underwater.
