Take them off the tactical slots completely. If we have them at all, make them droppable by prowlers/scouts so that way they serve some sort of late game purpose.

This.
Droppable by prowlers and, if you inlude it, the Point of No Return (also in enemy planets).

"Your destruction is the will of the Gods... and we are their instrument!"

Arbiter: There was only one ship.
Prophet of Truth: One? Are you sure?

Arbiter: Yes. They called it the "Pillar of Autumn"
Prophet of Mercy: Why was it not destroyed with the rest of their fleet?
Arbiter: It fled as we set fire to their planet. I followed with all the ships in my command.

Parangosky:"Corporal, when's the best time to kick a man?"

Vaz:"When he's down, ma'am. And preferably in the nuts. Hard as you can."

Then use scouts?

"Admiral, scouts indicate a heavy minefield with SMAC support ahead. Shall we look for other rou-"
"ARR! FULL SPEED AHEAD YE SCURVY SPACE DOGS"

This doesn't happen in real life.

*Sends in 50+ prowlers to clear out a wall (and I mean a literal wall blocking an entire entrance area of a gravity well). The prowlers take out 10 of the possible 150 mines before they are all wiped out.* Oh, that seems fair to me.

Giving prowlers the ability to drop them seems more canon then just throwing them around it space. It seems a lot more of a practical use. And if it were "real life" then the ships would just jump far away from the mines if they knew they were there, but since sins restricts their lateral movement somewhat that doesn't happen.

I meant use scouts to see where not to go. Not use scouts to clear a path.

Sheesh you guys, it's not like there's only one route.

Did you not get the part where I said WALL, one that blocks the ENTIRE entrance to a planet.

mine wall: a blockade of mines that covers all 90 degrees of space where a ship can phase jump (or slipspace jump) in to a gravity well

Well then, guess you're going to have to hope for the best, or avoid that planet. Sheesh.

in all honesty, this tactic is not recommended, it is very time consuming to make 150 mines, and if you have all of those mines guarding one phase lane, its a waste. this is exactly why i dont use mines currently, since i find the resources needed to not be worth the reward

That game we played last night, every single one of my planets had 150 mines on them. They blocked every entrance and made it impossible for any enemy ship from passing through. You wouldn't be able find a way around it because I made it a huge bottleneck.

On average, how long would it take you to beat someone with that kind of defense?

I had too strong of a culture to overthow. I just trying to point out that the current system does not work out for the goal of fast paced gameplay.

Seriously, mines coupled with SMAC grids and a battlegroup on every planet are super effective for me, as I'm not a greedy poo head and I'm content with a smaller empire.

I have tried it, hit and miss.
Combined with diplomacy and time, it is fairly effective, if you just go all out war straight up it's a road to crippling failure.

Keep them as is. You'll be glad that they're there once the Covenant and the Forerunners arrive.

This is why i dont think it would work against the covenant, because most of the time, its all out war

Not always though, I use muh diplomacy to negotiate truces and pacts.

Unlike you and your simpleton friends I can see the bigger picture.
