i dont know how the UNSC would be able to pull that off successfully in all honesty. Whenever i fight covenant, I try to get as many ships as i can on one point, to focus my attack and hopefully destroy everything i find at the planet, while drawing in enemy fleets. Its hit or miss 100% of the time, but thats how the battles play out in this mod. Massive slaughterfests of superheated dust :P

Also, im pretty sure dianno can explain all this ten times better than myself

Well I haven't played the mod but wouldn't it be possible for the UNSC to send half a fleet to one planet, drawing the covie players attention and ships as I would imagine the covenant would strike back straight after an attack. Meanwhile the other half of the fleet carves a path through covie worlds as they have zero defences.

Slipspace would still be a massive factor. The UNSC has extremely slow slipspace speed, especially in enemy territory due to the lack of the anchor station slipspace speed boost buff. So, while a UNSC fleet might be headed to a world to distract a covie player, the covie player would be able to catch up to the other UNSC fleet due to slipspace jump speed

If it's really that much faster then I guess it would be alright. They should still have minor defences though.

There is ZERO, NONE, NADA conventional defenses.

Bornstellar. No, you dont need defenses. Use your fleet. Your smallest ships can literally kill cruisers. No your pop is not going to be higher. Your ships are vastly superior. The disadvantage to the Covenant is you needing to macro your fleet more. If i gave them defenses then where the hell is their disadvantage? Its all fine.

So what happens if your playing a big map, 2 star systems. 8 planets connect to the star and each faction (UNSC, covenant) have their own system. How will the covies be able to attack if they have to split their fleets up so much to even have a decent defence?

That's poor system design. If we have any maps like that let me know and I'll get them fixed.

I figured as much, just making a point. Phase lanes are key strategic points in this game, so having everything connect to the star is a map design issue rather than a fault of Covenant doctrine. Having every planet connect to the star would be hard on UNSC forces as well, because that is a lot of defense you need to buy for each planet.

Good to know. If the maps are designed in such a way that the covenant really don't need defenses, I'm all for. I'd still like to have minor defense but this isn't my mod.

Ah, but then you adventure yourself in the "Non-Canon" section. You, in your entire life, have never, ever heard of any Covenant defense platform/ship. Hit and run, dude. Or not, actually they never run. Whatever.

Speaking of Canon, is the UNSC/Covenant ship balance 2:1 as canon would suggest, or not? I mean, do we need two Halcyon in order to take down one CCS?

Somewhere between 2:1 and 3:1 is canon. The numbers shift around a little. And currently yes we are as canon as we can be.

I've read most of the Halo books and not once have I seen any reference to ship based defence platforms. In fact, the covenant do have defences and it is canon. The book Glasslands specifically states they have anti-ship/fighter defences orbiting their planet.

Anti fighter would be different then anti ship. Remember ther anti fight lasers can still melt thru hull at close range. Not that this is what the mod team is putting in . The covies r always attacking, not protecting against a UNSC invasion.

I should point out that there is actually a cutscene in halo wars that supports the fact that covenant defended their planets with fleets of ships. Its the cutscene about the prophet of regret and the arbiter talking in the shield world, and the arbiter is ordered to kidnap professor anders. I can link it here if needed.
